25 Years Ago, May 5, 1999
Following roll call, Preston High students left their fifth period classes last Thursday and were bused to Oakwood Elementary School while Preston Police Department scouted the school for a bomb the caller said was set to go off. There was no bomb and the threat became a helpful drill. In light of the disaster in Littleton, CO, high school recently, when two students entered the school with weapons and killed 13 classmates and a teacher, local school administrators held training meetings to familiarize them with the school’s emergency plans.
A 16-year-old sophomore was apprehended by Preston Police for possessing two incendiary devices at the school. The devices were intended to cause a fire in a computer and the charges he faces are serious enough that they would be a felony if he were an adult. “This should serve as a wake-up call. Parents absolutely have to monitor their kids’ activities.”
The Great Basin Rodeo Club members placed in several events at the high school rodeo held in Downey. Judd Austin was named the all around cowboy for the rodeo. Others placed in various events, some more than one: Megan Anderson, Heidi Anderson, Jami Jones, Dustin Hulme, Nick Hyde, Tate Bowles, Justin Hollingsworth and Ashley Austin.
Emily Phillips loves to see the reactions of special Olympians when they win. As an assistant coach for Special Olympics over the last three years, she has seen that look often. “It’s fun to be with the Special Olympians,” Emily explained. She loves to help other people and has a talent for recognizing the needs of other people.
50 Years Ago, May 9, 1974Franklin County residents have been asked by Gov. Cecil Andrus to help find children who are not going to school during a statewide Idaho Child Find Month. It is an effort to locate children between the ages of six and 15 who are out of school and currently not enrolled in educational programs. The 1970 census has shown that Idaho ranks in the top 11 to 15 states in the nation in per cent of children out of school…Idaho legal statues guarantee the right of a free educational opportunity for all children.
Paula Palmer, a brown-eyed, brown-haired daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Palmer of Preston, was chosen as Miss Franklin County at the pageant in the Preston High School auditorium. Chosen first runner-up to Miss Palmer was Beverly Ann Carlson of Preston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Carlson. Second runner-up spot went to Rozanne Fonnesbeck of Weston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Fonnesbeck. Lisa Cook, daughter of Mrs. Joyce Cook of Banida was chosen Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants.

75 Years Ago, May 12, 1949Dale Panter of Dayton, all-conference guard and tackle at USAC and well known throughout this region as an amateur heavyweight boxer, cast his lot with professional football when he signed a contract recently to play next season with the Detroit Lions of the National League. Six feet, two inches and weighing 215 pounds, Panter is 20 years of age. He spent two years as a tackle and two as a guard on Utah State teams. Last fall he was named on the all-conference team, as a guard, by the Salt Lake Tribune. He will receive his bachelor’s degree in physical education in June.
By agreement Bruce Wallace and Phil West withdrew from all connection with Intermountain Air Service, which operates the Preston Municipal airport. It was a completely amicable settlement in order to make a more profitable working arrangement for those who will continue to operate the field.
Firemen and the county fire truck were called out early to the Woodrow Rasmussen farm near Mink Creek where two barns were completely destroyed by the early morning blaze. The alarm was received here about 2 a.m., but the fire was too far along for the buildings to be saved by the time the firemen could make it to the ranch. According to Mrs. Rasmussen, the firemen saved all other buildings by keeping water trained on them while a strong wind kept sparks flying.
100 Years Ago, May 7, 1924Early, about 12 a.m., on April 26, Dewane Hide, Joe Weeks, both of Smithfield, UT, came to Preston to dispose of some Liquor. Sheriff Head and David Davis interrupted their plans and put them under arrest. They were both brought into Probate Court. Their preliminary hearing was waived. They consented to go to Bannock County for sentencing where they pleaded guilty and received a sentence of 60 days in the County Jail and a $200 fine.
A number of our schools will hold graduation exercises at home. This is commendable and is indicative of intense interest in the educational affairs of these communities. They will all join in the County exercises also.
The general public is cordially invited to and urged to attend the County Graduation Exercises to be held in the Opera House on Friday, May 16, commencing at 10:30 a.m. Show by your presence that you are interested in the educational welfare of the boys and girls. They will make you welcome. All school trustees are specially urged to be there.
