Here we are again. Primary election season is well underway. Seems like we just finished this gauntlet a few weeks ago. As we all know, primary elections in Idaho are often the general election. However, for the first time in my memory, our general election this November will have more Democrats running against incumbent Republicans than we are used to seeing. In a bit of a repeat from my column of the same title 2 years ago, I thought I might share some of my personal thoughts on voting. This column is not an endorsement of any candidate or even party affiliation. Just offering up my basic philosophy and observations on the art and science of campaigning, something I have a little bit of experience with, albeit on a small local level.

Our beloved wife and mother, Blanche Lorraine Corry Evans slipped peacefully and gracefully from mortality the 30th day of April 2024 at the age of 88. Lorraine was born April 24, 1936, in Ogden, Utah, into the arms of her loving parents, John P. Corry, and Blanche Nellie Corry and was later joined by her siblings, Carolyn and John. She started college at Weber State, but completed her undergraduate degree in psychology in 1958 at Utah State University, where she officially became a lifelong Aggie. The social manners Lorraine's mother taught her, as well as her sense of fashion and beauty, made for a small line of suitors outside her off-campus sorority house. How a fellow Aggie who was a farmer and still living at his family home snuck passed the ever-present house mother is still a question to ponder to this day. Lorraine married her best friend, Clyde "Hoot" Tarbet Evans on September 19, 1958, in Ogden, Utah, and they were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Logan, Utah Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 18, 1964. In 1963, they built a home near the Utah State University campus in Logan where they raised their three sons, before relocating to Smithfield, Utah in 2003. Once all of her boys were in high school, Lorraine worked at First Security Bank for 11 years, until she decided she would rather spend her time golfing, so she retired from the bank to the fairways at the Logan Country Club. Lorraine and Hoot were fervent members of the Country Club for 58 years. They were also devoted Utah State University Football season ticket holders for 56 consecutive years, and they were inducted into Utah State University's Old Main Society in 1998. Lorraine and Hoot traveled to 47 states and over 22 foreign countries together, and have embarked on many cruises, some of their favorite places included China, Singapore, Spain, France, and Puerto Rico. They purchased a home in Yuma, Arizona in 1988 where they spent winters enjoying the warmer weather, social community, and the fish tacos in Los Algodones, Mexico. Lorraine was loved dearly by her friends and served freely in her communities. She served in many Church callings over the years including as Relief Society President and in the Primary. Lorraine was adored by her grandchildren, who were always happy to share a meal and a laugh with Grandma. Lorraine is survived by her husband, Clyde "Hoot" Tarbet Evans, 3 sons, Scott, Keith (Jodi), Gary (Maryann), 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, who will miss her dearly. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, John P. Corry, and Blanche Nellie Corry, and by her siblings, Carolyn, and John. Rest in peace, dear Mother. You will forever be in our hearts and memories until we meet again. Funeral service will be held on the 4th day of May at Allen Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, UT. Visitation 9:30 -10:30 am, Funeral 11:00 am. The family wishes to thank the staff at Autumn Care Assisted Living and Intermountain Health Hospice for the compassionate service provided to Lorraine. Our beloved Mother, Ruth Brown Holt slipped peacefully from mortality Thursday April 18, 2024 at the age of 92.

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great, great grandmother, Alice Julene Winter Ashby, passed away on April 23, 2024 in Smithfield at the home of her daughter. She was 89 years old. Julene was born on November 13, 1934 in Los Angeles, California to Andrew Winter and Alice Matilda Hansen. Julene spent her early years in California. Upon the death of her father her family moved to Garland Utah. Julene grew up in Garland, graduating from Bear River High school where she was involved in art and drama. She won two art awards; one being the "Top Senior Art Award". She continued to enjoy art throughout her life. She painted and drew many things for her family. Her biggest project was painting landscapes for each of her children. Julene married LaMar James Ashby on November 26,1952, in the Logan Temple. They spent 70 years together. Immediately after their marriage she accompanied LaMar to Fort Benning, Georgia. When LaMar was discharged from the Army, they returned to Utah arriving shortly before the birth of their first child, thus beginning to fulfil Julene's dream of having a dozen children. She had 13 children calling us her "Baker's Dozen". Julene loved her Heavenly Father and her Savior. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities. Those included; Relief Society teacher, Young Women's teacher, Cub Scout leader and many others. She served four missions with LaMar. They served in New Zealand, Nauvoo, Illinois; the Bishop's Storehouse in Logan, Utah and Sheep Springs, New Mexico. She gladly shared her testimony and love of the gospel with all she met. In addition to painting, Julene also loved gardening, music and writing poems. She sang often to her children to help them learn life lessons. She taught them how to grow food and beautiful flowers. She joyously welcomed spring and would walk through her garden delighting at the sight of each flower. The bounty from her garden was canned for family use. Any extra was often shared with friends and neighbors. She also wrote poems, often sharing these with friends and family to help lift their spirits and let them know of her love for them. Julene and LaMar moved several times as LaMar's jobs changed finally ending up in Newton, Utah. Here LaMar and Julene retired; farming, gardening and enjoying the grand kids as they came into their lives. She especially adored the new babies and cherished each one of them. Julene worked hard to care for her family and to make her house a happy home. Part of that happy home was Julene and LaMar's firm believe in Family Home Evening and holding family gatherings often during their years together. Our dad often called our mom; "the most beautiful wife he ever had!!" She would laugh and say, "I'm the only wife you've ever had!" They laughed together, cried together and were rarely apart. They had such deep love for each other. Julene is survived by her 13 children; Tina (Dale) Smith; James (Sharon) Ashby; Tranette (Dave) Carlisle; Kevin (Sarah) Ashby; Balinda (Robert) Whetstone; Bart (Peggy) Ashby; Alice (Rod) Christensen; David (Maria) Ashby; Jared (Camille) Ashby; Elizabeth (Karl) Decker; Farina (Steve) Buttars; Ruth (Brent) Palmer; Miriam (Bob) Sagers. She has 59 grandchildren; 111 great grandchildren and 10 great, great grandchildren with 55 spouses. With 1 great granddaughter and 1great grandson on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband LaMar, her parents, her 3 brothers, 2 daughters-in-law; Shayla (Kevin) Ashby; Sara (David) Ashby, and 6 grandchildren.
